Hearing aid Purchase Guide
If you are considering hearing aids, here are some tips from an expert:
· Price -Look for something within your budget. Hearing aids range in price usually based on their performance in various noise environments. If you are ok with pushing a button for noise help or volume adjustment you can save hundreds of dollars.
· Style -Pick a style of hearing aid that you will wear. Hearing aids come in over the ear or in the ear styles. If you have poor vision or manual dexterity, make sure to ask about easier options. The one you pick should be one that is easier for you to handle and to wear. Hearing aids don’t work if you don’t wear them!
· Provider- Try to find a provider who will provide service after the purchase at a low cost and convenient location. All hearing aids needs periodic maintenance and service so it helps to have an audiologist who is near you and with whom you feel comfortable, so you can get the necessary attention.
· Communication -Be verbal about what you are experiencing when you purchase so that the audiologist can help with the selection and adjustments. We may be experts but we cant read your mind so speak up and tell us what is happening so we can make it better.
· Audiologists - And finally, seek help from an Audiologist with experience. In some states both Audiologists and Hearing aid Dispensers can sell and fit hearing aids. Audiologists are Masters and Doctoral level, college graduates with more extensive training and education about the hearing mechanism anatomy and neurophysiology. Their understanding of hearing loss and when to refer to a physician is crucial at the initial consultation as well as in the subsequent years of hearing aid use.
