The Holidays are Here! Do you hear what I hear?

The Holidays are upon us. What an exciting time of year! Holiday parties and lots of family gatherings require better hearing. Jessi and I have been giving a seminar on Hearing and Cognition at several retirement communities around Naples. It's a great reminder of how hearing affects our comprehension and engagement in conversation, but mostly our quality of life!

When we are in groups it can be more difficult to hear, we may be tempted to tune out. Please don't! Your input and contribution to the conversation are important. If you are struggling to hear in groups, there is good news!

We recently attended a continuing education seminar on the new Signia AX line of hearing aids. These hearing aids are the first to use dual processors to bring the speech to the forefront in a noisy environment. I especially love the new Insio (in the canal) rechargeable and Bluetooth custom hearing aid. The Bluetooth is great for phone conversation clarity and the in the canal size has the same directional microphone technology as the larger styles for better hearing in noise. Rechargeable is of course convenient, but for some of us who have dexterity or vision problems, rechargeable is the solution!

Hearing and hearing aids are advancing so quickly and improving in technology. It is a great time to explore hearing aids. I love the sound quality and ease of these new hearing aids. I offer free in home trials and demonstration of these new hearing aids for you to hear

the improved sound quality. You can even borrow the hearing aids for a week to hear it for yourself.

Do you hear what I hear? That is my holiday wish for you and for everyone, to hear well! Give yourself the gift of better hearing this year!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Can I use the new Bluetooth hearing aids with my android phone?

A: Yes! Almost all the newer hearing aids are compatible with the latest android phones. Each manufacturer has a list of compatible phones I can check for you as long as you know your phone make and model.

Q: Are all hearing aids rechargeable now?

A: The hearing aid industry is moving in that direction. There are still battery operated hearing aids available but the rechargeable batteries are getting so good (lasting longer) that the factories will slowly stop making battery operated hearing aids. Signia has a great Power hearing aid for severe and profound hearing losses with a battery charge that lasts 60 hours!

Q: What happens if I wear my old hearing aids to water exercise class?

A: Most newer RIC or behind the ear hearing aids are very water resistant and have been tested to work even after being submerged in water. The newest Signia Insio AX custom, in the canal hearing aids also have this IP68 moisture resistant rating!

But if your hearing aid is older than 5 years it probably does not have this and if it gets wet it will stop working. Especially for us Floridians, water and moisture resistance is very important! If your hearing aid is older than five years it is probably time to get an upgrade!

Q: What can hearing aids do for my tinnitus?

A: Tinnitus or ringing in the ears has many causes. If your tinnitus is a symptom of your hearing loss, wearing a hearing aid will help to lessen the tinnitus. The new hearing aids have tinnitus therapy which is a signal which distracts the brain and helps reduce your awareness of the tinnitus. It is a type of sound therapy.

Q: Which hearing aid is the best hearing aid?

A: The best hearing aid is the one you will wear consistently. The technology available today you can hear better with any of the levels each manufacturer makes. All hearing aid manufacturers make several levels of technology like an entry level, basic, middle level and premium level. You can hear better with all of them, but you have to wear the hearing aid for it to work, it wont work if you don't dedicate yourself to wearing it. So if you like the smaller in the ear style, great! If you don't mind the behind the ear or Ric style, great! They are getting better every year!
